Lower Back Pain Q & A

by Kenneth Light, MD

What Causes Lower Back Pain?

Lower back pain is caused by a wide range of factors. Back pain can usually be grouped into four categories, including:

  • Injuries — fractures and sprains to the bones and muscles frequently caused by trauma like a fall
  • Mechanical — a mechanical issue with the way the spine moves
  • Infections and tumors — Osteomyelitis is an infection, and tumors can put pressure on the spine, causing pain
  • Conditions and diseases — Scoliosis, arthritis, spinal stenosis, osteoporosis, and ankylosing spondylitis, as well as conditions such as pregnancy and fibromyalgia

Emotional and stress-related pain can also be a cause. Sciatica is another common cause of lower back pain. However, other causes, including repetitive/overuse injuries and spinal conditions like spondylolisthesis, in which one vertebra slips forward over the other, and spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal, can also be to blame.

When Should I Seek a Surgeon’s Opinion for My Lower Back Pain?

If your lower back pain prevents you from participating in normal day-to-day activities, you should seek medical attention. Dr. Light provides comprehensive consultations before suggesting surgery to ensure that first, the patient doesn’t undergo unnecessary surgery, and second, that the best procedure to address the patient’s needs is selected.

What Lower Back Conditions Are Addressed With Surgery?

Lower back surgery can correct anatomical conditions that either pinch nerves or cause spinal instability. Dr. Light has many years of experience in performing spine surgeries to alleviate pain in the lower back. He is able to correct deformities and degraded vertebrae to relieve pressure on the nerves and restore the spine to optimal strength and flexibility. Dr. Light has been able to help many patients who had unsuccessfully tried more conservative treatments or who have had previous failed surgeries. If you are suffering from back pain that is getting in the way of your life, make an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Light.
